I am occassionally involved in some sort of collaboration. Sometimes I am spearheading a project that requires me to seek outside help to put it together. Other times, I am asked to participate in someone else's project. This is an example of one of those. Jequ, which is in itself a collaboration-based project between Howie Chen and Jason Kakoyiannis, invited me to participate in their current exhibition, entitled Bleu at 3001 Gallery at USC's Roski School of Fine Arts.

It is an exhibition consisting of 3 parts that are shown in the following order:
Top Oct 24-Oct 30; Mid Oct 31-Nov 5; Base Nov 5-10.
My piece in particular is part of the Mid show.

All Moved In!

It has been about two months since I first started my fundraiser blog (www.helpfundrubich.blogspot.com) and thanks to your overwhelming generosity I have officially moved into a studio (albeit not the one I was originally going for)! I will be sharing the studio, which is located on the 6th floor of the Vox building (and is also uncoincidentally just feet away from Astrid's room), with my buddy Steve Evans. It took about a month to move all my things, build the display wall, and build a palette table (all visible in the first picture). I have even begun working on some new things, which I will post within the coming weeks. Thanks again everybody!

My friend Nick Maimone asked me to collaborate with him on part of his installation series for the Hamilton Hall Public Art Initiative. Nick and I agreed that I would make a large portrait of Ed Coryell, the head of the Philadelphia Carpenter's Union, which had been demonstrating in front of Uarts since June. The piece was installed for a total of 12 hours before being removed by the school.

Afterward, it was included in the show REMIX at PhilaMOCA as pictured above (I will try to get a better image soon).

Hello everyone,

I will be participating in two upcoming shows within the month of September. One is a three person show with Andrew Geddes and Brendan Sullivan at My House Gallery. The opening for that show is Friday September 17th from 6-9 p.m. My House Gallery is located at 2534 S. 8th Street. You may read the press release here.

I will also be participating in InLiquid Benefit Show. The silent auction is September 30th from 5:30-10 p.m., the preview party takes place just a week earlier on September 23rd from 6-9 p.m.

Late Morning/Falling Man (After Bridget Riley)

This piece seeks to subvert the nameless, scaleless, and content-less minimal "op-art" abstraction of Bridget Riley through a minimal anomalic twist. This twist seeks to give the picture the capacity for simultenaety– so that is at once a photographic representation and a non-representational abstraction. The once unnameable rupture becomes a figure, the once scaleless grid now has a point of reference for scale and the stripes now describe an architecture. Together, they describe an historical event and acknowledge that during times of crisis everything goes through a process of reevaluation and even things that existed before the traumatic event, art historical works for example, can appear to be strangely prophetic.

Justin reminded me that while I didn't teach him, he did participate in a drawing marathon session last year. His senior work is really outstanding. Smart, clever, handsomely produced. The elements work well together. He's able to have discussions about the language of paint and of flatness and design without necessarily using paint. It'll be interesting to see where this goes moving forward. Will it stay on topic or will it expand? This could quickly become full-on sculpture. It could translate to video. There are a number of directions for the work.

Sande Webster Show

I won first prize at Emerge, the recent AAP Juried Student Exhibition at Sande Webster. I also received the honor of donating a piece to Sande's private collection. Also, congrats to Emily Rodia for taking second prize (Go Uarts Painting!). Here are a few photos from the show.

Eye Chart for Broad Street

The Eye Chart for Broad Street project has been in development since February, when I was selected by President Buffington and some professors of mine to build the piece on site in front of Hamilton Hall at 320 S. Broad Street. Here it is in its final form. The Eye Charts will remain on site through the commencement ceremonies and will come down May 21st.

Here are some images taken at Metropolitan Flag and Banner, the company that produced the enormous banners for my Eye Chart for Broad Street project. Thank you so much to Gerry Glasgow and MetFlag for making this possible.

The second to last image is of myself, Steve Smink, and his mother. I'm holding Olivia Newton Jon's United States visa that allowed her to tour the U.S. as a country singer. But that's just a little side note. Steve is the guy who built and installed the structure for the project. Without Steve, this project either would not have happened or it would have ripped off and tumbled down Broad Street weeks ago. As I'm sure you all have noticed, this is not the case. While all other banners are whipping around madly, the Eye Charts gently sway and remain quite unthreatening. Thank you Steve.

I must also acknowledge Steve Streisguth, who drafted the image in Adobe Illustrator. Steve's work not only helped me present the proposal professionally, but also helped to produce the final product exactly how I intended. Much thanks to Steve Streisguth!

Guardian of the Threshold (After Polke), sumi ink on mylar

Based on my grandfather’s MRI’s, these ink on mylar drawings bridge the gap between the ethereal and visceral worlds. Just as the light is projected from one side to penetrate the negative space of the drawing, so does the viewer project themselves onto the positive space, as in a Rorschach test. It is through the validation of both worlds that the drawing’s existence is recognized. The drawings undergo several simultaneous validations; One being the surgical/autopsy experience of delving into the physical material to study the decay, corrosion, or fault in the bodily system (to study “what went wrong”); the other being the remembrance/evaluation experience of delving into the memorial material to commemorate the life of the individual (to celebrate “what went right”).
